Since I've had this question a few times before I thought I'd explain what I mean. Pantsing is a term that has arisen in various writing communities. It is a shorter way of saying "fly by the seat of your pants", which basically means you make your story up as you go. To put it simply, a planner is the adverse to planning. A person who plans... well, plans. Some planners do so religiously, down to every last detail, but generally most writers fall somewhere between the spectrum - refer to the picture above. I am what is considered a pantser-who-plans. Most of my work is unplanned, aside from the ending and characterisation of my MC's. So, what kind of writer are you?

Tell me about it, I'm stuck at the moment for that precise reason. Though I didn't intensionally plan, I had some future scenes come to me, and mistakenly wrote them down... and now I keep thinking ahead and can't get back on track.

I'm a planner who pants ... or am I a pantser who plans...? Oh dear.

Depends on what you do more. If you plan more, it would be the first. If you pants more, the second.

I would definitely be a pantser who plans(ish). I generally always know how the story begins (first line/scene/image/character), something that allows me the 'in' to the story and I know how the story will end so I have a goal to work towards. Everything in between...I figure out as I go.

I'm pretty similar to you Amy, except I usually need a bit of info on my MC"s as well.

Pantser in most aspects of my life, including my writing (when it happens). To quote Mr HS Thompson: “Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!”
